Mark Kagan Urgently Needs A Liver Donor

Oct 14, 2024

Mark Kagan
Mark Kagan

My name is Mark Kagan. I am reaching out with an urgent and heartfelt plea as I am desperately seeking a living liver donor.  Below, you will find my story and details about the donation process.

Only a portion of the donor’s liver is needed, and it will grow back to its full size within 6 to 8 weeks.

Even if you are unable to donate, sharing this message could be the vital connection that leads to a donor.

If you have any questions, can assist, or are interested in donating or helping the appeal, please contact MarkNeedsALiver18@gmail.com or call/text (204) 290-9618.

Further information can also be found at www.MarkNeedsALiver.ca and on the Mark Needs a Liver Facebook page.

Thank you for your compassion and Shana Tova.

I have been diagnosed with a nonalcohol-related, rare liver disease called nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH), a condition that has drastically and rapidly affected my health. I am now fighting hard for my life. Just a few months ago, I was extremely active, working full-time, regularly swimming and distance-walking, as well as traveling and spending time with family and friends. Now, I can barely walk without assistance. I am weak, thin and can hardly eat. The decline has been rapid and profound.

There’s no cure for this disease, and the only way to save my life is through a liver transplant. Unfortunately, the wait for a liver from a deceased donor is long, and we’re running out of time. This is why we’re urgently searching for a living donor who can help give me a chance to continue his life.

I have a strong spirit and positive attitude. I have no intention of letting this stop me. I always say, “I am not going to mope”. Although my voice is now uncharacteristically weak and quiet, my will is still there. I love my family, who are all rallying behind me.

Other ways to help

The liver is unique in its ability to regenerate. This means that only a portion of the donor’s liver is needed.  If you or someone you know might be willing to help, the first step is to fill out the Donor Health History Form below. This form is reviewed by the UHN Transplant Program, and from there, the journey to becoming a donor begins.
