In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, ADL called for a further review of Senator Chuck Hagel’s record in light of an account of a 2007 speech in which he allegedly said the U.S. State Department acted as an "adjunct" of Israel’s Foreign Ministry. “If it is true, it is very disturbing," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “If he didn’t say it, it behooves him to tell friends and detractors that he didn’t say it.” Foxman added, however, that “It is somewhat puzzling that this quote would surface just on the eve of the vote” to advance his nomination as U.S. Secretary of Defense.
